SUSTIPAN is the oldest DWS area in Croatia. It is located in Split, near the city center. Cliffs are mainly 6-10m high and the routes are usually overhanging with large holds. Right now there are about 30 routes up to 7c. For Sustipan DWS you don’t necessarily need a boat because it is possible to reach the cliffs from the neighboring beach. CIOVO is the island north of Split town with a great DWS potential. Development of DWS started couple of years ago and there are now 120 routes (5c-7c+) in 12 sectors. Routes are usually much higher (up to 20m) than at Sustipan area and climbing is more serious and dangerous. Also it is hard to reach the cliffs without a boat. Certain sectors are impossible to climb without chalk! SV.NEDJELJA on the island Hvar is also a well known as DWS area with the hardest routes up to 8a. Few years ago there was also a deep water solo festival. You can reach cliffs without a boat. Right now, these 3 DWS areas are the most developed in Croatia but potential for this kind of climbing is really enormous and every summer local climbers spend some time to find new untouched spots. Few years ago a team of foreign climbers with some famous names like Sharma, McClure and others climbed 50 new routes on the islands of Kornati National Park, including world's first DWS 8b+ route. Unfortunately the park authority has forbidden DWS for now, but we hope that will be changed in the near future!
